Microsoft may have just dropped the biggest hint yet that it is gearing up for the launch of an entirely new smartphone - the Surface Phone.

The leak comes from the Microsoft Australia official Twitter account, which according to MSMobile accidentally tweeted a promotional image teasing a “New One in Surface family!”

The image, which appears to include official Microsoft branding, shows a dark smartphone shape, flanked by Microsoft’s existing Surface Book laptop and Surface Pro 4 tablet device.

The leak is the latest to hint at an imminent reveal or even release for the Surface Phone as Microsoft looks to refresh its smartphone family.

Rumours have been building , which according to reports could feature a 5.7inch touchscreen with 2K resolution, powered by a Snapdragon 830 processor, and sporting a 20megapixel rear camera with a Carl Zeiss lens.

The Surface Phone could even be a hybrid device, with leaked images suggesting it will have a keyboard cover that allows users to type, similar to Microsoft’s Surface Pro devices.

The future of Windows 10 on mobile had been called into question in recent months, after a long period of struggle for Microsoft's smartphone division.

The company revealed it would be cutting nearly three thousand jobs from its smartphone operations back in July following a long period of decline.

Microsoft had already said it would be laying off 1,850 other workers back in May as it looked to streamline its many operations. 

The cuts mean that the company has now let go 10 per cent of its total workforce in the past few years.
