Present continuous tense jhs
- 2. WE USE PRESENT CONTINUOUS TO TALK ABOUT: • Action happening now at the moment of speaking. • Now you are looking at the screen and at the same time... The dog is running.
- 3. FORM We form this tense with the auxiliary verb TO BE and adding –ing on the verb. S + TO BE + V–ing + O (am is are)
- 4. FORMS Positive form I am playing You are playing He/ she/ it is playing We are playing You are playing They are playing Negative form I am not playing You are not playing He/ she/ it is not playing We are not playing You are not playing They are not playing Question form Am I playing? Are you playing? Is he/ she/ it playing? Are we playing? Are you playing? Are they playing?
- 5. SPELLING RULES If a verb ends in a consonant, just add – ing. play-playing join-joining work-working If a verb ends in E, drop it and add –ing. take-taking drive-driving make-making If a verb ends in IE, you change it to Y and add –ing. tie=tying die=dying
- 6. SPELLING RULES If it is a short verb and it ends in a consonant, in some cases you double the last consonant. run+n+ing=running swim+m+ing=swimming You double the last consonant, because the order of letters is: consonant,vowel,consonant. run+n+ing=running C V C You DON’T double if it’s some other letter order. And you NEVER double W, Y and X. eat+ing=eating pay+ing=paying buy+ing=buying mow+ing=mowing fax+ing=faxing If the verb has two or more syllables and the last one is stressed, you also apply the rule. admit+t+ing=admitting
- 7. TIME EXPRESSIONS There are signal words (time signal) that help you identify the tense. The most common ones are: • at the moment • now • today BUT Pay attention because sometimes you need to read carefully the sentence (situation) and determine if it’s Present Continuous. Something that draws your attention that the action is taking place at that very moment! It could be something like: Listen! Look! What?! etc.
